A Beautiful Curse
Acrylic on Masonite
26" x 26"

This painting A Beautiful Curse is an attempt to depict the conflicting emotions
the artist sometimes goes through during the creative process.
Sometimes painting can be a torture-filled process where the mind and
the paintbrush can become completely disconnected.
Other times, the artist is sent to the heights of elation when the emotion flows easily onto the canvas.

The painting process for Paul starts with the preliminary sketches.
He then experiments with cropping the edges to work out the best possible composition.
The sketch is then transferred to a primed canvas or
hardboard at which time the application of paint can begin.
When working with acrylic, thin washes of paint, water, and
gloss medium are applied in a slow buildup of layers which allows light to blend the color.

Among the artists that have most influenced Paul are
great names such as Rembrandt, Egan Schiele, and Piet Mondrian.
Paul finds it fascinating to do portraits of new and interesting subjects.
He is very intuitive when working with people and animals and
loves to create a work of art that families can cherish through the generations.
